Flood Alleviation Works

Following the repeated flooding in recent years, Kilgallen & Partners have been commissioned by Local Authorities to design flood alleviation schemes for several areas prone to flooding. These schemes have commonly been designed and implemented in close consultation with the Office of Public Works.

Our experience in working closely with local stakeholders, local authorities and the Office of Public Works places us in a position to deliver a cost effective design which integrates the proposed works into the local environment. Projects we have worked on to date include:

Leixlip Flood Alleviation Scheme

Following a number of major flood events in recent years, Kildare County Council appointed Kilgallen & Partners to design flood alleviation works along the Rye Water River and the Sileachain Stream in Leixlip.

The project entailed the following services:

  • Liaison with all relevant statutory bodies and local residents in the course of identifying strategies, measures, existing floodplains and flow restrictions;
  • Procurement of topographical and hydrographic survey of the study areas;
  • Hydrological analyses and floodplain mapping
  • Preliminary Design
  • Attendance at meetings with residents;
  • Preparation of Part 8 drawings and reports including responses to submissions;
  • Detailed Design of the Works;
  • Economic, social and environmental assessment of the proposed works;
  • Close working relationship with the OPW on site throughout the construction of the Scheme;
  • Accepted and fulfilled the role of PSDP.

The project included the use of innovative design features, including the incorporation of flood-resistant glass panels into a masonry-clad concrete retaining wall. This maintained the views of the river for the ground floor of an apartment block situated c.2m from the bank of the Rye Water river.

 

Johnstown Flood Alleviation Scheme

The project entailed the following services:

  • Liaison with all relevant statutory bodies and local residents in the course of identifying strategies, measures, existing floodplains and flow restrictions;
  • Procurement of topographical and hydrographic survey of the study areas;
  • Hydrological analyses and floodplain mapping;
  • Assessment of the indicative damage caused by flooding;
  • Preliminary Design;
  • Attendance at meetings with residents;
  • Preparation of Part 8 drawings and reports including responses to submissions;
  • Detailed Design of the Works;
  • Economic, social and environmental assessment of the proposed works;
  • Close working relationship with the OPW on site throughout the construction of the Scheme;
  • Accepted and fulfilled the role of PSDP.

The project required a detailed assessment of the complex flood patterns of each watercourse, including the overlap of their respective floodplains in Johnstown village centre.

 

Callan Flood Alleviation Scheme

Following a number of major flood events in recent years, Kilkenny County Council appointed Kilgallen & Partners to design flood alleviation works along King’s River in Callan.

The project entailed the following services:

  • Liaison with all relevant statutory bodies and local residents in the course of identifying strategies, measures, existing floodplains and flow restrictions;
  • Carry out detailed topographic and hydrographic surveys of the river bed, banks and adjacent floodplains;
  • Hydrological analyses and floodplain mapping;
  • Preliminary Design;
  • Attendance at meetings with residents;
  • Preparation of Part 8 drawings and reports including responses to submissions;
  • Detailed Design of the Works;
  • Construction Supervision;
  • Accepted and fulfilled the role of PSDP.

The project included the use of demountable flood barriers to accommodate occasional access to the river for emergency services and facilitate local cultural events.
